Lucky Shoppers Love Their Prizes!

Rosanne of fabfibers, one of our First Monday Lucky Shoppers for January who happens to be sister to Bev of noeasybeads and aunt to Heather of humblebeads, has received her Taste of Texas goodie box and posted a lovely review and pictures on her blog.

Also, Ruth of RHRadcliffeDesigns, our ETC member chosen as January's Lucky Shopper, posted this note regarding her Taste of Texas goodie box:

"I just received my Taste of Texas package and want to say thank you and that it is a really wonderful way to spotlight ETC artists. So as someone who has seen what this wonderful package contains, you really want to be a part of this. There are so many different ways we're represented and what a great way for people to recognize us. So if you haven't added anything to the taste of Texas, you really should. The samples and promos are great."

Thank you, both, as well as everyone else, who shopped with us during our last First Monday sale!

January's Texas Treasure Hunt - Winter Wonderland

Originally posted on January 13, 2008

By now everyone is familiar with ETC's awesome First Monday Sales event when dozens of ETC shops participate by listing fabulous sales in their shops. Since 1st Mondays are so popular we thought we would give 2nd Mondays their day in the spotlight too! Second Mondays are Texas Treasure Hunt days!

On the 2nd Monday of each month, ETC (Etsy Texas Crafters) will host a Texas size Treasure Hunt!

Winter Wonderland Treasure Hunt details:

  • This month we want to warm you up Texas Style! Willy the Perky Penguin has escaped from TiddlyInk's shop & is running amuck through Texas Etsy shops picking out all his favorite items to warm your heart, warm your spirits or just plain keep YOU warm.

  • Our January Treasure Hunt will begin at 12:01am on Jan 14th & end at 12:00 midnight on that same day (Central time -- that would be 1:01am Monday to 1:00am Tuesday, Etsy time).

  • To play, search participating ETC member shops to find a minimum of 10 items with the designated image in the items' photos.

  • When you've found 10 or more items, convo your list of the URL addresses (links) for those items to ArtSpot

  • If there is more than 1 correct entry, by the midnight deadline, all correct entries will be placed in a stocking & one winner will be drawn. If there are no complete & correct entries, the person with the most correct entries will be designated that month's winner. Winner will be notified/announced no later than midnight on Tuesday, January 15th.

Sorry, but ETC members are not eligible to win.

Tip: The more items you find and submit, the better your prize selection will be. The winner will get to *choose* 1 item from their submitted list as their prize!

Disclaimer: In the event that the winners 1st choice of prizes sells during the contest, winner would have to choose another prize from their submitted list.

Have fun hunting!

Until further notice, if you need to reach me, please convo me. Also, I am not sure at what time they closed my accounts today, but if you sent me an email today, please re-send the info via convo.

Up and Running?

Originally posted on November 17, 2007 by Christy of ChristysQuilts

What has everyone been up to? We're coming upon the holiday season when everyone gets busy and no one has time to blog and crafting takes a back seat (unless you're crafting for gifts - then it takes front and center - anyway, you get my drift).

I've been busy opening my second Etsy shop. I know the Etsy 'powers that be' frown upon it, but my lip balms and other bath and body stuff don't fit in my Christy's Quilts shop at all. Even with the use of sections. My new shop is called The Plaid Mushroom. It's mostly just lip balms, but I'm working on some solid perfumes and possibly some soap, though that takes a long time to cure so it won't be ready by Christmas. I love my little plaid mushroom so much I made a transfer and have put it on Tshirts, hoodies and totebags. One of the totes is listed in my shop - the Tshirt and the hoodie, which I only made one each of so far, are mine.

The Bath and Beauty category is so overrun and I know it'll be hard to compete, but I'm making them anyway, so why not give it a shot. It's fun making these things and I'll be able to use them as/for/with Christmas gifts.

As for my primary shop, it's taking a rest. My husband and I are trying to sell our house, so my sewing room is getting packed up. I can bring it all out for custom orders, but otherwise, I'm not making new items. All the items in the shop are already made up and can ship out immediately if they are bought. FYI, there's still plenty of time to ship to ensure Christmas arrival.

Take a peak around at my shops. Let me know it was you, and I'll do the same for you. Maybe we can find things in each others shop we just can't live without!

The fun starts Friday, September 28, with the Etsy Labs Last Fridays Trunk Show from 6-8 EST. Then, because things are bigger from Texas, the show continues on Saturday afternoon from 1-5 EST. More than 50 Etsy Texas Crafters will be represented, and there will be yummy Texas edibles and door prize drawings every half hour throughout both days of the show (no need to be present to win). Be one of the first 25 people at Friday night's show and receive a Texas-size goodie bag! Plus, it is free and open to the public -- just rsvp to rsvp@etsy.com so we'll know you're coming!

Don't know how to get to Etsy Labs? Click Here.

Can't make it to the show? Attend virtually via Etsy workshop, and shop the sales in the ETC shops throughout the entire weekend (there will be an online treasure hunt, too!). Visit our website or our team shop for more information and links.

The Finished Product!

Originally posted on August 22, 2007 by Christy of ChristysQuilts

Well, I got home from my trip and immediately started working on binding and totally completing the quilt. Took me a couple hours and then it was done!

I always get so excited when I finish a product because unlike a lot of crafters my favorite part isn't making the item, but finishing it. Looking at it. Imagining how it will be used and loved. It's a little piece of me.

I like to imagine how 'little pieces of me' will be used by the people who receive my creations. Not limited to just my quilts but even my little purses and things that don't take me 40 (or more) hours to complete.

In my head this lap quilt (throw size, 50" x 65") will be placed on the sofa and cuddled under by the newlyweds. It will warm their feet and legs while reading a good book. In future years they will lay their little babies on it to protect from the carpet. It will grace the foot of beds and be used in a play-fort. It will be cried on, hugged and dragged around the house. It will be loved.

This little quit will be part of my friends lives. A little part of me will be sharing in their joy.

It's possible that this won't happen...that the quilt will only be looked at a time or two and put in a safe place to be appreciated when the coldest of cold days hits in winter. That's ok too. It'll still be used and appreciated for it's warmth and function.

I love making quilts. I love giving them.

Here's the finished product (front, back and label)

What Are You Working On???

Originally posted on August 19, 2007 by Christy of ChristysQuilts

Two friends of mine are getting married on Sept 2. That's only two weeks away and I'm very excited for them because they are both exceptional people who make each other very happy.

I checked their online registries and found out that a lot of their household items are going to be black and white. I also asked my friend and she said the house would be very contemporary, black, white and red. Now, it's been a while since I've made a completely pieced quilt. So I decided to make one for them as a wedding gift from the hubby and I. Black, white and hints of red.

Another person in a quilting group I am a part of had just made a quilt that inspired me. I decided to make the same basic design except in my colors. I verified with her that she was ok with me using her pattern and she was A-OK with it. Excited even.

So I picked out lots of black and white print fabrics, solid black and solid white. It took me a day to get it all starched and cut out. Then another day to get the top pieced together. The next morning I quilted it! (I'm a very fast sewer and quilter).

I decided to make the quilt label on the front of the quilt this time as part of one of the blocks. It looks nice and I'm glad I decided to do it that way.

I still need to bind it, but I'm out of town right now for work, so I can't get to it for a couple more days. I'm excited about how good it came together.

I like the design so much (as does hubby) that I'm going to make one for us too! I can't wait to show it to you in a few weeks (when I have time to finish it between jobs).

Here is a picture of it I took before it was completely put together (and before quilting it).

(Ignore the odd angle, it's the angle I held the camera, not the skew in the actual quilt)

I'll get a closeup pic of the top, label and back as soon as I get back home. :)

Anyway, this is the project I'm working on...what are YOU working on?

Show Opportunities in Austin

Originally posted on August 7, 2007

I know of two show opportunities in Austin and the deadlines are coming up fast. If you are planning to show at or attend either one of these events, please leave a comment and maybe you could meet up with some fellow ETC members!

The Maker Faire is a two-day, family-friendly event that celebrates arts, crafts, engineering, science projects and the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) mindset. It’s for creative, resourceful folks who like to tinker and love to make things. It will be held October 20-21, 2007 at the Travis County Fairgrounds. Click here to read their call for makers information page, and here to read about it on the Etsy blog. Proposals are due by Midnight (PST) Wednesday, August 15, 2007.

The Stitch Fashion Show and Guerrilla Craft Bazaar is an annual celebration of independent design, artistry and creativity. You can sign up for your designs to be worn in the fashion show, or for the craft fair, or both. The 2007 show will take place Saturday, November 10th at the Austin Music Hall. Applications are due Tuesday, August 28th.

Update posted on August 22, 2007

Both of these events have extended their deadlines for proposals/applications!

Maker Faire — new deadline for proposals is midnight, Sept 6th

Stitch — new application deadline is midnight, Aug 28th

Howdy!

Howdy and welcome to the Etsy Texas Crafters Blog! I finally figured out the imaging problem, so we will be able to post pictures now. I just wanted to share my vision for the blog and ask for your input as well. I see it as a place to promote ETC and our work, and also a voice in the crafty community. I see a collaborative effort with lots of link sharing, tutorials, interviews with members, reviews of new products/books, and all sorts of other crafty goodness.

If you would like to be a contributor or have and questions, suggestions, and/or comments, please convo me through my Etsy shop. Also if your blog link is missing from the list, please let me know and I'll add it.

Thanks, Mandi, aka Scribbles

1. You can properly pronounce Corsicana, Palestine, Bexar, Decatur, Wichita Falls, San Antonio, Burnet, Boerne, Nacogdoches, Mexia, Waco, Amarillo , and Waxahachie.

2. A tornado warning siren is your signal to go out in the yard and look for a funnel.

3. You've ever had to switch from "heat" to "A/C" in the same day.

4. You know that the true value of a parking space is not determined by the distance to the door, but by the availability of shade.

5. Stores don't have bags, they have sacks.

6. You see people wearing bib overalls at funerals.

7. You measure distance in minutes.

8. Little Smokies are something you serve only for special occasions.

9. You go to the lake because you think it is like going to the ocean.

10. You listen to the weather forecast before picking out an outfit.

11. You know cow-pies are not made of beef.

12. Someone you know has used a football schedule to plan their wedding date.

13. You have known someone who wore a belt buckle bigger than your fist.

14. You aren't surprised to find movie rental, ammunition, and bait all in the same store.

15. Your "place at the lake" has wheels under it.

16. A Mercedes Benz is not a status symbol; a Ford F350 4x4 is.

17. You know everything goes better with Ranch dressin'.

18. You learned how to shoot a gun before you learned how to multiply.

19. You actually understand this and you are "fixin' to" share this with your friends.

20. Finally, you are 100% Texan if you have ever heard this conversation:
"You wanna coke?"
"Yeah."
"What kind?"
"Dr. Pepper!"

Q&A about the ETC New York Trunk Show

Originally posted on June 20, 2007

Q: Will there be a booth fee?
A: No

Q: Will Etsy or ETC keep any portion of the proceeds from items sold at the Trunk Show?
A: No -- you keep all the money from the sales of your items

Q: Should we expect our items to sell, or is this a "display-only" event?
A: "While we expect there to be great sales, we hope that you all will look at this invite as an opportunity to really get your names out there above anything else! This is an excellent opportunity to show off your goods and hand out lots of business cards & promos. Again, we are hoping for and expecting great sales at your event!" (Mary, Etsy Labs)

Q: How much space will be allotted to each seller?
A: This is a very difficult question to answer, since this will not be set up in the same manner as a craft show would be set up. This is especially true since less than half of the people participating will even be able to attend. There will be a limit to the number of items each person can take/send, and those who are unable to attend will be "partnered" with someone who will be attending. This person will be responsible for unpacking and displaying their partner(s)' items, handling the sales of those items, and then re-packing the unsold items (I hope that ETC will have enough funds by then to pay for return shipping). More information on item limits and partners will be provided as we get closer to September.

Q: How much space be allotted for the trunk show?
A: "We have two large open tables (approx. 4' x 7.5'), and we have several other spaces throughout the floor that could work well with your show. The whole floor is flexible and could potentially be used, depending on what your needs are." (Mary, Etsy Labs)

**I am hoping one or two of the folks who will be attending will volunteer to coordinate the set-up (hint, hint)

Q: How much traffic do they have at these trunk shows?
A: At the few trunk shows they have had so far, they had maybe 20 or so people (not including Etsy staff). They fully expect these events to get larger in the future, and are incorporating band shows with the trunk shows. "The reason we have decided to hold these trunk shows and theme them around entire street teams on the last Friday of each month in conjunction with band shows is to great a huge buzz in Brooklyn about the shows! We haven't had any shows of this caliber yet, and the first one will be this very month beginning with the Philly Street Team. We are most definitely expecting a large crowd and great event with them!" (Mary, Etsy Labs)

Q: Why do we need to create flyers & invitations? To whom will this event be promoted?
A: "We most definitely want you to design invites and flyers, as by the time September comes around, these regular shows will be big news and we are hoping for a full house at each event! We are certainly makreting these street team shows outside of Etsy, including several online NYC classifieds, publications, and websites. We hope that you also will make an effort to advertise the show within your team on your sites and blogs to add to all our promotion! The invitations are for not only the NYC area Etsy sellers, but locals who are interested in music, art, crafts, Etsy, as well as local boutique owners, and press publications who might be interested in covering the event." (Mary, Etsy Labs)

**Jeannette (JMDay) & Jen (LucyBlueStudio) are working together on designing our flyers and invitations (thanks again, ladies!!!)

I think this covers all the questions I have been asked and been unable to answer. If there are more, please let me know (and be patient with me while I try to get complete answers from Etsy staff).

We are now up to 48 ETC members planning to participate in this event!
